You might be surprised to learn that water damage is one of the most common and costly homeowner claims. The good news is there are ways to save your home and your possessions from the extensive damage even small floods can cause. Let’s start with your home’s exterior. Regular maintenance of critical areas on your property can prevent water from making its way into your home.
Disconnect Hoses From Faucets is a must for your fall to-do list. Water left in the hose can freeze back into the pipe and create ice that bursts pipes, damages walls and floors, and cracks foundations.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts at least twice a year to avoid blockages. Standing water can freeze, causing damage to gutters and roofs. If those backups overflow, puddling water can even harm your foundation. Don’t forget to clean downspouts and make sure they point away from your home.
Maintain Trees and Vegetation to stop thriving shrubs from wrapping their roots around your pipes and breaking them. Scale back your landscaping near utility pipes and remove trees and shrubs that have grown too large.
